Mount Athos monk Ephraim (Moraitis) first came to America in 1972 at the invitation of his spiritual children. He
talked to people, counseled, comforted, taught ... Americans feel the
need to live the word of the Gospel and the search for a real spiritual
life, Elder Ephraim began their missionary work. One by one he opened nineteen Orthodox monasteries, male and female,
in various regions of the US and Canada: New York, Texas, Florida,
Washington, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Illinois, California,
Michigan, Montreal and Toronto.
His first monastery in the US , the monastery of St. Anthony, was founded in 1995 in the waterless arid desert in Arizona. Housing Elder Ephraim and his disciples were four trailers.

Today the monastery - a blooming oasis,with the number of visitors holding second place for Arizona, is only slightly behind the Grand Canyon. Elder Ephraim, now lives in the monastery and serves as a spiritual guide to thousands of lay people who come to Arizona from all over the world.
